Applying the ever-growing age of technology to paintings, I have begun experimenting with watercolour and using a drawing tablet as a guide to focus on the saturation and distortion of colour. Just like traditional fine art, digital art can now offer multiple mediums and styles that can be used to express these traditional ideas. Using contemporary methods to create a new style of art that borders reality and fantasy, mixing the past with the future.
The primary objective within my work is to create paintings, currently specialising in watercolour with a mix of digital editing, that focuses on the saturation and distortion of colour. Using the people who are closest to me, such as friends and family, I transport these muses into my illustrations to help express the stories I am trying to depict. In these hyper-colour portraits, the focus and objective of my illustrations are to alter the skin tones of my muses to make them appear unnatural and alien-like, to separate these beings from reality. This stems from a personal interest in science fiction and retro-futurism. Having always been fascinated by space, specifically in film and comics, the goal is to create illustrations to transport my viewers into a fantasyscape like something I would’ve enjoyed reading whilst growing up.
With the end of my Fine Arts degree, my work has shifted from an interest in painting towards a fascination for illustration. Storytelling through artistic expression is the direction my work has decided to follow, through the incorporation of graphic design with watercolour paintings. This has allowed me to learn more about the importance of text, to use traditional painting as well as a fascination for digital art to guide the creation of my book and lead to the conclusion of my degree as a freelance illustrator.
